We believe that every school deserves a competent and consistent clerk to assist with its governance processes. That is why, at Clerks of London, we will work alongside Chairs and school leaders to ensure that boards fulfil their statutory duties. From setting the agenda to sending the minutes, we are there every step of the way when preparing for a meeting.
However, we also believe that clerks should be available at any time – not just at meetings. Therefore, we are always on hand to offer advice on governance matters and best practice, as well as undertaking skills audits, maintaining Registers of Interest and monitoring governors’ terms of office.
Regular training is undertaken to ensure that advice any provided is in line with the latest developments in the rapidly-evolving world of educational governance.
Beth Holmes qualified as a Clerk in 2010 working for Hertfordshire and Essex County Councils. She was then promoted to ‘Comprehensive clerk’ meaning she was assigned to schools with serious issues, such as where Interim Executive Board had taken over. Since starting her own company in 2015, Beth has worked with a number of schools who were deemed to ‘require improvement’ by Ofsted and assisted in getting their governance arrangements back to ‘good’. In addition to this, she also works with a number of good and outstanding institutions and seeks to improve governance where possible. In 2021 she was a finalist for the National Governance Association’s Outstanding Clerk to a Governing Body award.
